Welcome to Uncover: discovering the truth about racial injustice through God’s perspective!
Throughout the next five weeks, we will be hosting a series of blog posts and conversations to discuss the intersection of anti-racist mindsets and the Gospel. We believe the Lord’s heart is aching for the Black community and inviting us all into action. As believers, we are called to spearhead the charge of justice, and that’s exactly what we want to talk about through this series.
So we (Ife + AJ) invite you into our friendship as we engage in hard conversations and the growth process to uncover the truth about the Lord’s desire to see His body united. Before we kick-off, we want to share a little bit about ourselves so you know a little bit more of the voices shaping this conversation!

Hi everyone! My name is Ife (E-feh) Oladoja and I’m so excited for things to begin!
If you couldn’t tell from my name or my picture, I am a black woman. Specifically, I am a first-generation Nigerian American who was born and raised in the Bay Area! I attended Washington State University (“Go Cougs!”) and was heavily involved in a college church plant where I met some of my closest friends and also experienced some of the highest highs and lowest lows in my life. Through it all, I know that my experience and challenges were not wasted or ever in vain.
While living in Washington I worked for Dutch Bros. Coffee (if you know you know), sang nearly every week for my church, coordinated and hosted women’s ministry nights, events, and retreats. All of this while having another part-time job, being a care provider/source of income for my mom and confronting the daily battles of looking like me, a Black woman, while living in a small “hick-ish” town. If you’re not exhausted just from reading that, then imagine the daily toll living it! In hindsight, I probably bit off more than I could chew but so many of the cards AJ and I have been dealt in life continue to develop us into the women we are today.
In the summer of 2019, I was blessed with the opportunity to move to Dallas, praise the Lord!
Since living here, I have been so blessed by the people and community the Lord ushered into my life, while still remaining intentionally close with my long-distance best friends!
Meeting Krista and joining the Live Salted team is a WHOLE other story I’ll have to share with you later, but I have the greatest pleasure of working for Live Salted as our HUB Coordinator!
**Quick Disclaimer: In no way, shape or form am I the singular voice in the Black community. I am but one of many who have the complexion I have and the experiences that come with it. But as you join us in this series and conversation know this; “If you don’t know the burden, how are we supposed to help carry one another.” This is bigger than just my experience or your takeaways from this. It’s making “things on earth as it is in heaven” the same prayer as the Lord’s. It’s surrender. It’s repentance. It’s forgiveness. It’s growing. It’s changing. We don’t have all the answers, but we are making a table you are invited to join us at, and when we’re done we can clean up the mess and wipe up the crumbs we made together.

Hello new friends. My name is AJ, well really it’s Amethyst because my parents were hippies and named me after a rock with healing powers. A few fun facts about me: I’m obsessed with ice cream (even though I’m lactose intolerant), a nonfiction writer (with a whole thesis on memoir under my belt), I’m the type of person who changes their hair roughly every three months (you know the type), and I’m fiercely devoted to seeing justice in our world.
The truth is, for weeks now, I’ve wondered if I’m even the right person to be part of this content series. While I know that racism grieves the heart of God, I wonder if I am the best fit to talk about it. I am a white woman who grew up in both the suburbs of the bustling metropolis of Los Angeles and of the rural dirt roads of northern Arizona. I experienced a wide range of life, growth, hardship, heartache and privilege, but I have certainly never experienced anything as the result of my skin. My friends growing up in Los Angeles were from all over the world and taught me about all kinds of different experiences. But in my rural Arizona town, I think there were approximately three Black people in the whole eight years I grew up there. I struggled to understand the difference, and I especially struggled to understand the rhetoric of my new white town. Suddenly, the celebration of different cultures I had been raised with was replaced with fear, misunderstanding, and the weaponization of the Bible.
I knew in my spirit that the Lord wept at the hands of racial inequity in my town and abroad. But I struggled to find my voice. I struggled to find any voice. And I especially struggled to find my own ideas in my ultra-conservative, Bible slinging, gun-toting, close-minded town.
When I was seventeen I moved away for college and wound up at Washington State University where I studied a bunch of arts and humanities and found my home most often in my sociology courses where we debated capitalism, racism, feminism; all the -isms. I was always so fascinated by the intersections of my faith in these spaces. Where others had nothing but heartbreak, I found that my heartbreak also bore hope. Where others had rejected the Word, I recognized the hurt of false gospels and drew nearer to the heart of God. I joined the same college church plant as Ife — and that’s where our story begins.

We became friends through our Bible study group in small-town Pullman, Washington. We bonded over shared turbulent childhoods, self-discovery journeys, and our mutual love of a good time. Over the years we spent in Washington together, we shared our hearts, our minds, and our dreams.
There is a beautiful history that AJ and I (Ife) have cultivated. There are high hills and deep valleys, but through all the challenges we faced, we never gave up on each other. I knew that the belief I had in her was matched by the belief she had in me. That’s my favorite thing about our friendship, which is actually more of a sisterhood. We have laughed together, we have cried together, we have bumped heads and have deeply grown together because of the voice we have but equally desire in each other’s life. I trust and honor my sister Amethyst, but above that, I simply believe in her.
I (AJ) distinctly remember many many tearful conversations huddled around a rotisserie chicken in the front seats of my college car as we muddled through the mess of the world and the blindness of our brothers and sisters in the church.
We often found that we didn’t quite fit the mold of the white church we had been presented with, and we struggled to find our place in the small communities of the Palouse. We had so many conversations about the body of Christ. So many tearful, joyful, frustrating, and hopeful conversations about what it would look like and if our church home represented Heaven.
The election came and went, political separatism, cultural unrest, and overarching lack of knowledge led us into conversations that broke us and healed us. And on the other side, we began to recognize our distinct voices in our respective spaces. Especially, when it came to the topic of race and the Lord’s perspective in a united and bold Body.

Uncover is designed to do exactly that: uncover. We want to invite you into our friendship and share the same hard conversations about race that we’ve been having for years. We want to grow together in what it looks like to invite God into the rawest and most vulnerable spaces. And most importantly, we want to pray together, advocate together, and remind one another about the character of Christ.
A few days ago praying about this series, the Lord specifically spoke to me (AJ), “When you chose to be a person of faith, you relinquished every right you ever had to apathy.”
[/fusion_text][fusion_imageframe image_id=”8997|full” max_width=”” sticky_max_width=”” style_type=”” blur=”” stylecolor=”” hover_type=”none” bordersize=”” bordercolor=”” borderradius=”” align_medium=”none” align_small=”none” align=”center” margin_top=”” margin_right=”” margin_bottom=”” margin_left=”” lightbox=”no” gallery_id=”” lightbox_image=”” lightbox_image_id=”” alt=”” link=”” linktarget=”_self” hide_on_mobile=”small-visibility,medium-visibility,large-visibility” sticky_display=”normal,sticky” class=”” id=”” animation_type=”” animation_direction=”left” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_offset=”” filter_hue=”0″ filter_saturation=”100″ filter_brightness=”100″ filter_contrast=”100″ filter_invert=”0″ filter_sepia=”0″ filter_opacity=”100″ filter_blur=”0″ filter_hue_hover=”0″ filter_saturation_hover=”100″ filter_brightness_hover=”100″ filter_contrast_hover=”100″ filter_invert_hover=”0″ filter_sepia_hover=”0″ filter_opacity_hover=”100″ filter_blur_hover=”0″]https://livesalted.com//wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Screen-Shot-2020-07-22-at-12.56.16-PM.png[/fusion_imageframe][fusion_text columns=”” column_min_width=”” column_spacing=”” rule_style=”default” rule_size=”” rule_color=”” content_alignment_medium=”” content_alignment_small=”” content_alignment=”left” hide_on_mobile=”small-visibility,medium-visibility,large-visibility” sticky_display=”normal,sticky” class=”” id=”” font_size=”” fusion_font_family_text_font=”” fusion_font_variant_text_font=”” line_height=”” letter_spacing=”” text_color=”” animation_type=”” animation_direction=”left” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_offset=””]
And so we are uncovering the hard truths and rejecting apathy in exchange for the holistic, righteous, and uncomfortable faith the Lord calls us into.
We hope you join us on this journey.
